Our Mission

AviationRef.com publishes free aviation reference material. Much of what a student pilot needs sits inside expensive textbooks or inside regulatory documents that are hard to search and harder to read. The aim here is to put the same information somewhere you can find it in a few seconds.

The focus is practical: ICAO standards and terminology, weather decoding, ATC phraseology, navigation, airspace classification, and flight planning. Each topic is written in plain language and tied back to the official document it came from.

Accuracy & Sources

Content is built from official documents: the ICAO annexes and docs, FAA handbooks, EASA regulations, UK CAA publications such as CAP 413, and national AIPs. If a statement cannot be traced to one of those, it does not go on the site.

Pages are revised when ICAO standards are amended or when a national regulator changes a rule, though there is always a lag. Nothing here replaces the documents published by your own national aviation authority, and you should check against them before applying anything operationally.

Who Writes This Site

AviationRef.com is written and maintained by the AviationRef Editorial Team. We publish under a team name rather than individual bylines, so it is worth being clear about how the material actually gets made.

Every page is compiled from primary documents. In practice that means the ICAO annexes and associated docs, EASA regulations and AMC/GM, UK CAA CAP 413 for radiotelephony, and the FAA handbooks (the Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, the Instrument Flying Handbook, and the AIM). Where a page states a rule, a limit, or a phrase, the source it came from is listed on that page so you can check it yourself.

We do not claim to speak with the authority of a regulator or an instructor. If something here is wrong, out of date, or reads as ambiguous, tell us through the contact page. Corrections get applied, and the page carries a note saying what changed and when.

Editorial Standards

The working rules are short. Use plain language, but do not lose technical precision to get it. Name the source. Say so when a rule varies between jurisdictions rather than picking one and hoping. Link to the official document wherever there is one to link to.

Errors get fixed once we know about them, whether we spot them or a reader does, and the page records the change.
